Time for Pruning
Today, Ontario’s Wiarton Willie, called for six more weeks of winter while his counterparts in Nova Scotia and Pennsylvania are calling for spring instead! The majority rules in our books and who can argue with Punxsutawney Phil, the best-known weather predicting woodchuck. It’s time to get revved up and pruning in the vineyard! Thanks to our neighbours, we’ll be using a pre- pruning machine to help make the job a bit easier, efficient and economical. Grape growers have long used hedging or mowing to remove part of the wood on vines trained to cordons. The pre-pruning machine cuts the canes of superfluous wood making it easier for the vineyard workers. The vineyard workers will continue to hand prune all but 4 canes of one-year-old wood which are specifically selected for their bud spacing and eventual fruiting ability. With the pre-pruning machine there is less cutting which means spending less time and effort in getting the vineyard ready to produce a quality wine. Gotta love technology!
