Another great meeting and wine pairing!
We hope you had time to read something by Freida McFadden which was our October read. Our members read a number of different books including: The Tenant, Ward D, The Locked Door, The Housemaid and her latest, The Witch.
Freida McFadden is known as a master of the psychological thriller. For a few of our members this was a new genre. We all agreed that her writing style is incredibly distinct, often characterized by several key elements: including a twist at the end of the book, often flipping the narrative in the final chapters. The chapters are short and the writing style punchy, making her books a quick read. The protaganists all had flaws either secret pasts, hidden motives or questionable morals leaving the reader wondering who to trust.
Depending on which book was read by our members, this author was received with mixed reviews. That is the lovely thing about a book club: we read something you may otherwise not choose and we learn about many different authors, so all good!
This author’s books were paired with a lovely 2022 Pinot Noir from North 42. The wine’s layered and nuanced flavours slowly reveal themselves with every sip making it a perfect match to a psychological thriller. The wine opens with delicate, red berry note sand then slowly reveals earthy, forest-floor, and savoury spice. It changes in the glass over time, mirroring a plot where characters and motives slowly unravel.
As we shared our other top reads of the month a few members shared and highly recommend the book I See You’ve Called in Dead, by John Kenney. It is a humorous fiction book about an obituary writer who writes his own obit and while in a drunken moment submits it to his newspaper. It gets published and he shows up for work the next day. A fun, light and funny read!!
SO… NEXT UP FOR NOVEMBER….. we are reading The Sisters of Book Row by Shelley Noble. This is a 2026 book available as both an ebook and an audiobook on HOOPLA. This is a historical fiction about 1915 Manhattan’s Book Row, “an eclectic jumble of forty bookshops” during a time when book banning laws were creating havoc for the shop owners.
